Shaddon Mill
This is Shaddon MIll in Carlisle, built in 1836 by Peter Dixon. In its day it was the largest cotton mill in England, and the chimney, at 305 ft, was eighth tallest in the world. It's walls are 10 ft thick at the base. It is certainly one of the best known buildings in Carlisle, alongside Carlisle Castle, Tullie House Museum and Carlisle Cathedral, and certainly its best-known local landmark, though it is invariably referred to as 'Dixon's chimney'. The chimney was shortened to 290 ft in 1950. Being such a popular and iconic structure the chimney was restored by Carlisle City Council in 1999, and is now Grade II listed, as is the mill. Part of the mill was converted to flats, or should I say luxury apartments, in 2005.
The extra is Carlisle Christian Fellowship church, which stands next door to Shaddon Mill. I fell over so took the photo whilst lying in the gutter.
