Smash
Nice day, despite the weather not quite being able to decide if it was continuing with summer or not. On the whole, it was warm without being the spectacular heat we've been having, though it did cloud over and toss a few drips down on us later in the day. It's actually been a welcome relief to be a bit cooler.
Headed to town when I'd finished at work to do a few jobs. First on the list was collecting a parcel from the PO. I was a bit surprised to see the state of the box, as was the teller. She advised me to take a picture before I opened it up just in case there was any damage to the contents. Turned out all was fine :) Second on my to-do list was to collect my photos from the printers. Turned out they've had a run on printing and the paper stock to print my images on ran out before they were all done. The recent stormy weather may slow down the delivery of new stock too so I decided to take what was done and work with them for the time being. I'll get the others next week. On the way back home I noticed a 'sale' sign in a cute wee shoe shop that specialises in less mainstream footwear and decided to go take a look. No sooner had I exited my car and turned towards the shop there was a very loud bang followed almost immediately by screams and tinkling glass. I swung around to see a car on the other side of the road had tail-ended another at the roundabout. The screams had come from two young girls who were right alongside the accident on the pavement. The young guy just hadn't seen that the car ahead was there/had stopped and rear ended her. They were both OK though the lady became concerned about her neck and whiplash. He was uninjured but stunned - the front of his car was completely smashed, his radiator was leaking all over the road, his airbags had deployed (I wondered if this was the 'bang'?) and it was clear that his car wasn't going to be going anywhere without being towed. The two girls headed down the road to the police station but came back to say they were closed! Instead, they called the police and got instructions whilst I helped the 2 drivers with details, contacts etc. By the time I left the scene things were pretty much sorted for getting further assistance for both parties but there was nothing much more bystanders could do.
I took a punt that the shoe shop might still be open.....it wasn't, but the lovely lady inside saw me try the door and opened up then let me go wash my hands (I had antifreeze all over them from picking up debris off the road). Turns out she has heard the smash, seen me and the girls go to help and was more than happy to serve me if I still wanted to shop for some shoes. Twenty minutes later I walked out with a new pair having had a lovley chat with this complete stranger.
Two smashed incidents in the space of an hour - a wee bit creepy! So happy that no-one was hurt.
