Helena Handbasket

Remember this?

And how it was unceremoniously dumped on the side of the road awaiting a decent level plinth and other finishing touches? Well here it is now, perhaps 500 yards from where it was, down a lovely little lane and beneath a classic pine tree. The view from the other side shows it against a twinkly sea with small islands behind, it could almost be Santorini.

The door tells me it is dedicated to saint Konstantinos (he of Constantinople fame) and saint Kyriaki, which rather surprised me. For one thing, Konstantinos is usually paired with his wife mother Eleni, and for another, Kyriaki means “Sunday”, literally “The Lord's Day”.

I know that Saints Konstantinos and Eleni are celebrated on 21st May and my list of name days tells me that Kyriaki is on 7th July, but more than that I know nothing. The door remains locked and the lettering on it, factory installed, is falling off. Beside the door is a little plaque with the address and phone numbers for the pre-fab church factory.
