Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Another day, another castle.

It's no accident that the NE corner of Scotland is known as Castle Country; they are thick on the ground.
This morning we travelled across country to the village of Oyne to meet up with friends. Prior to a spot of lunch we walked up to one of their local castles, Westhall.
Westhall, was built in the 16th century by the Bishops of Aberdeen. It is now in a sad state of decay and dereliction despite being an A Listed Building.
Westhall has a small place in railway history, being the point where work began on the Great North of Scotland Railway in 1852. The estate owner at the time, Sir James Elphinstone, had formerly been active in the Aberdeen Canal Company.
