Quanice's Great-Grandmother, Sylvia Dollarson

Quanice “Moose” Hayes was shot and killed by Portland Police officer Andrew Hearst on February 9, 2017 after someone reported an attempted robbery of his food stamp card by “a young Black man,” and the police found Quanice.

Quanice’s family and some of the Portland community met on the anniversary of his death for a vigil in the place where he was killed. Uncles, aunts, and cousins remembered stories of his playfulness, his kindness, his tenderness toward his siblings. His mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother spoke, and toward the end of the gathering, two of his brothers spoke of how much they miss him, how lost they feel without him. This is Sylvia Dollarson, Quanice’s great-grandmother. She hung banners, set up the vigil area, handed out candles, and remembered Quanice as a kind of “star” in the family because he was so reliable, so mature for his age. “He was the one everybody else looked up to. If there was trouble between his mom and another child, he’d be the peace-maker and get everybody laughing so they could get over it.”

The Extra is Quanice's mother, Venus, supported by one of Quanice's sisters.
