Every drop
We have a dripping tap. Well, it is not really a dripping tap, as it only drips if a certain person in this house does not turn the tap off properly, but there is a problem. It is not the washer, as that has been changed. We really need some new taps, but have not got round to doing anything about it.
So the point is - if we lived in Cape Town, a dripping tap would be fixed immediately, here we don't feel the urgency. Whilst we were in South Africa, the shortage of water did not really affect us that much, but when we were close to the city, we were certainly aware all the time of how much water we were using and tried to use as little as possible. This became a way of thinking and it certainly made us value water much more.
We might complain about the rain, but being without water, or being restricted to fetching an allocation from a central tap, just doesn't bear thinking about. We take having plentiful water so much for granted. Well, I don't think we will any more. And we will get that tap fixed!!
Postscript
I have just read on the news that Cape Town has had rain at long last - such a pity we missed this event. Apparently people went out to look at it, and they danced and sang. Sadly, there wasn't sufficient to put an end to the crisis situation, but at least people could 'harvest the rain' for their own use and maybe gardens won't look quite so dry now.
