Forgotten Heritance - "Bambaragasthalawa"
This 36 feet long Buddha statue lies deep in the forests of Kumana National Park. The statue was built in 8th Century B.C.
It's situated in a nice cozy cave which is able to withstand anything that the nature could throw at it. But the ancient kings could not foresee the biggest threat that this masterpiece would face in the future. "The Humans"
The treasure hunters have dug up the statues' stomach area of Lord Buddha & have entirely blown up the sacred head with dynamite. This is not similar to what happened in Afghanistan where terrorists blew up the Bamian statue. This was an act of pure greed.
Many wouldn't believe the following, unless you have seen it with your own eyes. The immediate area in front of the statue is filled with sand & rocks. Outside this cave is a fully grown forest with trees all over. But not one leaf gets blown into the chamber, which is truly un-explainable. Our local trekkers who visited this site mentioned that they have never seen a tree leaf in this chamber during their many visits. As you can see, there're bushes & trees right outside the area, but the leaves never fall inside.
There have been many more statues like these in the vicinity & they have been completely blown off or stolen.
This is a lost heritage in our tiny little island that needs to be restored & protected. Or else the next time someone visits this place, there'll be nothing left to see.
