Guernsey and beyond

The Guernsey Lily - Candie Gardens, Guernsey

It was great to catch up with Mr. M. yesterday evening and to hear about his trip to Dubai and Cyprus.

This morning we headed off to do our usual Saturday chores, get our hair cut and then stopped by Candie Gardens to see the last exhibition of the Guernsey Lily.

To have a plant species named after you is considered quite a coup, and the island of Guernsey has the honour to be immortalised in the name of a particularly lovely lily that grows wild in South Africa. The lily in question , the "Guernsey Lily", has the botanical name of Nerine sarniensis. Sarnia was the Roman name for our Island.

Local legend has it that the first bulbs were washed ashore on the west coast at Cobo Bay from a ship wrecked en route from Japan.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.
