The World Through My Eyes

By Marlieske

It ain't over till the fat lady sings...

Well, it's not her name... but that's really hard to translate...
She is made of bricks and concrete and her diameter is 3.5 to 4 meters and she is 3 meters high... made of bricks because it's the product of the river. For the masonry they used stones from surrounding stone factories,  wasters and boulders from the surrounding area, including the remains of the ruins on the Gannita Circuit. Concrete, because the artwork exudes strength and firmness. The 'Dijkwijf' is on a mound. This mound is located at the high-water refuge. The artwork is visible from water and land at a great distance, as befits a good beacon. From all points of view, 'A Dike of a Wijf' is recognizable as a woman. She looks out over the landscape towards the river, upstream...
The mound rises from the ground level. The base has a diameter of 36 meters and will mainly consist of grass so that it can be grazed. As the mound rises, there will be scattered fragments here and there. The fragments / stones will increase in density and eventually turn into a solid brick form: the skirts of the 'Dijkwijf'. More can be read here https://waalweelde.gelderland.nl/Bakens+aan+het+water/533621.aspx?t=Dijk+van+een+Wijf+(Gendt) She is a tough woman...

Pffffff, wipes sweat from forehead...

Pulled out of the clay
Fights weather and wind
can water the water
Takes children on the arm
when the water rises
The oerwijf (translated as The oyster)

Has curves
like the river
Gives life to the worth
Heats the skipper
with her love
The oerwijf

Collects the stories
from the riverbank
Sizes and cherishes
We see from afar
as a beacon of rest
The oerwijf...
