Last of the Argyll Autumn
Well I had a fantastic time at the National Mod. There was much singing of Gaelic songs, meeting old friends and drams. The competitions were good and in some cases the results were interesting!
The Oban choir who are few in numbers compared to the big ones came last in the morning competition so needless to say they were dissapointed! In the afternoon They were then singing in the biggest competition of all the Lovat & Tullibardine Trophy and were last on so were naturally terrified.
I had sat in the audience and listened to the entire competiton and was losing the will to live as choir followed choir with the usual dirges. The set piece was bad enough but when others followed it with yet another bloody dirge I was all for chucking myself under the next West Coast Motors bus! I also new that Oban as their own choice was the conductors own arrangement and sometimes that can be a hit or a miss!
However on they crept and began very quiet as the piece had a very high soparano part and most choirs chose to front a solo first soprano and in most cases it would have cracked your glasses! Our lot just went for it with what they had and after the first song I was hopeful that at least they had got through it without any major disaster. Then onto their own choice which was a much ligter song. I just held my breath all way through and when they got to the end you could have heard a pin drop! I thought wow! they nailed that! The entire hall resounded to the biggest round of applause of the afternoon.
Almost an hour later the results came and guess what? they got 4th! Fantastic result. There was only one point between them and the 3rd choir and if truth be told Oban were better! Anyhow they were happy especially after the morning results. A good long and happy night was had by all.
Happy blipping all
