Pub Sign No. 4
The Robin Hood - Cragg Vale, Hebden Bridge.
You may well associate Robin Hood with Nottingham and Sherwood Forest - but he has strong links with Yorkshire.
According to the Yorkshire Robin Hood Society he was born in Wakefield, lived just south of there in Barnsdale Forest, was made an outlaw after the Battle of Boroughbridge in 1322, and returned to Kirklees Priory in Calderdale where he died/was murdered at the hands of the Prioress whilst he was being 'bled'. A monument in the woods near the River Calder claims to be Robin Hood's grave.
The sign reads:
Ye Bowmen and ye Archers good,
Come in and drink with Robin Hood.
If Robin to the fete has gone,
Then take a glass with Little John
My 'extra' shows the pub - albeit on a much better day than today.
(Just to underline the local belief in the connections - Hebden Bridge boast two pubs named 'The Robin Hood').
