Plateia

Glossa village has three public 'squares'. This is the largest, called 'Central Square' and is in front of the main church (The Assumption). In recent years a cafe has opened up in one corner of the square and named itself 'Plateia' which means 'public square'. It has given itself some really quite distinctive crimson branding and there are crimson notices dotted about the village to alert passers-by to its existence and location should they have been previously unaware.

This is where we celebrate Carnival, Independence Day, The Feast of the Virgin, OHI Day and pretty much every important day in the Greek calendar. It is where the community congregates. Most of this section of the square belongs to the community but the foreground and the bit round the side of the church belong to the church.

The crimson plant pots are a recent addition. They continue all around the square, including some on the church steps. It is almost as though the proprietor of the cafe were taking over the public square by stealth, a bloodless coup if you like. But no, surely she wouldn't do that?
