Propeller Flower
Now I am calling this a "propeller flower" because I have absolutely no idea what it really is. Norma (who normally knows this sort of thing) was stumped as well ... even after half an hour of research in the "Encylopaedia of Plants and Flowers" . Having said all of that, some of you will no doubt know EXACTLY what it is - straight off. If you are one of the latter, you'll no doubt think I am a complete dope .... aaaaand you'd be right.
In any event, the flower reminds me of a propeller or a windmill of some kind. In the remote event that I have stumbled upon a plant which is entirely new to science, I think I might start calling it propellus hobbsii. Yeah. Sounds good ... don't you think?
HOLD THE PRESS!!!!!. It would appear that this may be vinca minor (possibly vinca major) which are varieties of "blue periwinkle". It's considered a weed in some places but can be used as a herbal medicine in the treatment of haemorrhages. Gee. There's even a variety of this thing from Madagascar (vinca rosea) which is reputed to be a cure for diabetes. Well blow me down.
