Diary of an Edinburgher

Duck Pond

The missing Bus Pass has not turned up yet, despite my searching high and low last night. I am taking CBLinks' advice - three of them will probably turn up all at once without any effort from me. But our Sunday bus service is rubbish, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Headed off for a hike up Blackford Hill, but spent an hour at the Duck Pond and then we were tired out, so we came home. The pond is very full - I've never see the water level so high, and indeed, the island is no more.

No sign of the four cygnets. Have they flown off? Mr and Mrs Swan were both there and didn't appear to be concerned. There were hardly any ducks, actually. Loads of bread. Lots of families come down with whole loaves of white bread and chuck it in. The edges of the pond are full of the soggy slices. The birds obviously don't care too much for the stuff.

There were dozens of gulls who seemed to like it though, and every now and again, they would all swoop to the other end of the pond and fight over bits. I would hot-foot it round to them, and they would fly back to where they had been and sit contemplating for a while more, then all take off to another part. This went on for quite a while. I did take lots of shots, but none are good enough to share with you. I really need to practise this. I need to take some lessons from Chamaeleo, with his excellent bird action shots.

I have some very exciting news.

No - I haven't won the Lottery.

No - I haven't found my Bus Pass. Or my Club Card.

And no - the knocking hasn't been fixed yet.

Much more exciting. I'm going to keep you all in suspenders for a day or two.

It involves a four legged creature.

But no - not getting a dog. Yet. Not THAT exciting!
