Gita

My Dear Fellows and Dear Princess,

I woke up today in the pitch dark and was surprised to find it was quarter past six.

The reason for the blackness was Gita, a tropical cyclone hovering over Wellington. We were just getting the tail end of it. It caused havoc in Tonga last week.

There have been dire warnings for the past few days and we were all warned to be prepared. Today at work it was very quiet as workers stayed home or left early before public transport was cancelled.

But actually, it was just like a summer's day in Edinburgh. It rained all day, sure, but I found it quite pleasant. Even the winds weren't so bad.

Don't get me wrong. Wellington CAN be incredibly windy. Imagine Edinburgh at its very windiest or me after a curry. Like that, but about once a fortnight.

But actually, that didn't materialise today. It was windy but we've experienced far worse in the short time we've lived here. And I had brought in the balcony furniture and put it in the kitchen and everything.

I battened down the hatches for NOWT. Hmph.

Er Indoors related the local state of emergency engendered by Gita to her Cousin Helen in Shetland, a place not unfamiliar with wind and rain. Helen advised the Wellingtonians to "Gita grip" which I thought was quite funny.
