The ghost stane, Mabie forest
It’s my birthday and we are away in the beautiful area of Mabie, Dumfriesshire for two days. I loved the way we just came upon this sculpture on our walk in the forest trails this morning. It seemed to float!
The Ghost Stane. One of the Seven Stanes. Situated in the 'misty glade' - a beech wooded area with a small stream, near Mabie - this stane is made from white marble. The 2.25 tonne sculpture appears to be standing by itself. Its surface is engraved with a local lace pattern.
It is one of seven which represent the 7 Stanes mountain biking centres. The Ghost Stane references the nearby National Museum of Costume at Shambellie House and the white monks of Sweetheart Abbey.
The other six are:
Glentrool - Giant Axe Head
Kiroughtree - Gem Stane
Dalbeattie - Cleft Heart
Ae - Talking Head
Glentress - meteorite (with inscription in Klingon!)
Newcastleton - Border Stane
