Let There Be Light

My hubs and teen son are enjoying the Giants game today so I said to myself Yippee! What better time to take an early morning ride to Cape May South Meadows to see if any more raptors were migrating!

I made it to the last exit on the Parkway by 9:30am after a two hour drive. There's a beautiful inlet just before the You Are Leaving the Garden State Parkway sign and I just happened to catch a glimpse of a black feathered head with a red bill, so I pulled over to the shoulder and got out of the car. The unidentified bird was drifting like a solitary Sunday driver and I definitely scared the dickens out of him because he took off like a bat flying fast across the road and there was no way I could follow him. As luck would have it though, two hawks were flying in my direction just at the same time and I was able to fire off a few shots.

Whoohoo!

So far I've spotted the Northern Harrier doing his best to nab a tree swallow, the bald eagle far off in the distance, a flock of white egrets, black vultures, the yellow rumped warblers, and a little palm warbler that stayed five steps ahead of me wagging his little tail. He was just too cute.

I'm sitting at the Cape May Lighthouse Hawk Observatory picnic table as I type and will probably post pics to flickr tomorrow. I find it really hard to stay away from this environment, not to mention that everyone I meet is so bird crazy friendly!

Last I overheard, the Giants were up. Go Giants!
