Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Bòcans playing in the snow.

The local Bòcans (domestic Scottish hobgoblins, often mischievous and sometimes dangerous, but is also very helpful when the need arises) were much impressed with the Winter Olympics. They have built a bobsleigh and are busily practicing for the next games.

Yesterday's mystery proved to be, well a bit of a mystery; walkingMarj came closest with the suggestion that it was across section. But of what?

It is a slice through the molar tooth of an Indian elephant tooth. You can clearly see the alternating bands of soft yellow dentine and hard white enamel. They act as a file when the elephant grinds its food. In Indian elephants the bands form parallel lines, rather like a series of capital letter "I"s, I for India! In African elephants they are lozenge shaped, like a pair of capital "A"s placed end to end. A for Africa! So, now you know.
