Laaxum was in 1325 Laxnum and in 1487 Laexum. In 1345, an army of count William IV of Holland came ashore at Laaxum to fight the Frisians, which led to the Battle of Warns.

Around 1500 man could fish the european flounder on the "Vrouwenzand", a shallow at the time in the Zuiderzee. And from the 17th century on eel. After the closure of the Afsluitdijk it is as good as done with the fishing in Laaksum...
