A hundred emotions
To the Leeds Grand Theatre, for a performance of Don Giovanni by Opera North. As always when seeing an opera, I was struck by the lush complexity of the experience - an orchestra, solo and group singing, acting, overacting, costumes, lighting and effects. I particularly enjoy some of the over-the-top lyrics - one line that stood out tonight was "my heart seethes with a hundred emotions." I wanted to ask "go on then, write down 100 separate emotions. You can't, can you?"
This performance was staged and directed to draw attention to the timeless nature of the moral tale of the opera, a clear contemporary Me Too relevance from a work written over 230 years ago. But the overriding memory will be of terrific singers giving their all for 3 hours.
