Second First Solo

I took up flying during the summer between high school and college. I soloed in a Piper Cherokee that summer (gulp) 30 years ago. I did some more training a few years later, but distractions and life circumstances sidetracked me from finishing up training for a private pilot license. So as a mid life crisis experience, I decided to work towards actually doing it this time. Given the extremely long hiatus, it is indeed starting from scratch. The airspace rules have substantially changed for instance, and GPS wasn't even a pipe dream. It's been great fun so far, but there have been challenges and wrinkles so far. The biggest hurdle lately has been the weather. I've been chomping at the bit to solo for over a month, but low temps (-30F, -33C), fog, snow, and wind have been getting in the way. To add insult to injury, my first instructor was involved in an "incident" that took him out of the instructor business for now. I had to garner the confidence of a new instructor (half my age) such that he would feel secure enough to step out of the right seat for three take offs and landings by myself. His name is Brian and he's the other one in the shot. I'm hoping the weather improves such that I'll have a license by the time it's green and the days are long here.
