Beauty on a grotty day

This plant has managed to establish itself in the small crack where the pavement meets a wall (see inset), there are no gardens very close by and I am amazed at how it can grow so well and how it got there. It looks so much more beautiful than anything in my garden at the moment, I wonder what I am doing wrong.
