Cattle in the Kreupelbusch

The former Ubach landfill site on Worms, now called the Kreupelbusch, originated from the extraction of raw materials. Sand and gravel were won here before the Second World War. The excavation took place in the western part to about 75 meters above NAP (seelevel). Around 1970 the excavation stopped. Between 1974 and 1979 the eastern part was a landfill for household waste and industrial waste. After raising with soil to approximately 85 m + NAP (seelevel), the western part was taken into use. Household waste, sweep and market waste, industrial waste, construction and demolition waste, sewage sludge and agricultural waste have been deposited there.

Under the management of the then Streekgewest Oostelijk Zuid-Limburg, approximately 6.2 million m3 of waste was deposited from Eastern South Limburg and, in recent years, also from the Maastricht and Mergelland regions. The waste package is locally 45 meters thick and the final height is 128 m + NAP (seelevel).

The Kreupelbusch is approximately 40 hectares and lies to the northwest of the industrial estate Abdissenbosch. On the north side is the German-Dutch border. No waste has been deposited within a 15-meter strip from that border.

Finish
The completion of the landfill site started in 1994 with the installation of a geohydrological screen (1994) followed by the application of landfill gas extraction (1996). The landfill gas is converted into electricity in a special installation (utilization installation). This installation also converts the landfill gas from the operational landfill Landgraaf (Attero) into electricity. Landfill gas production has decreased from 9 million kWh in 2003 to 3.5 million in 2015 and will decrease further in the coming years.

The top seal was installed from 1996-1998. The landfill is finished with a double seal of clay and HDPE foil. Since 1999, aftercare has taken place at the landfill.

Use
Grazing of the terrain takes place by Galloway cattle. This landfill was opened to the public on 17 October 2007 by the mayor and aldermen of Landgraaf.
