New washing machine

The old washing machine went on the blink so new one arrived today. The instructions advised to run a wash with an empty tub and half the amount of soap powder to remove any residue from the factory. The only soap powder we had was Dreft handwash which recommended 1 cupful of powder so I used half. Clearly there is a problem with the instructions or there is controller error. I wonder which?
