Hardknott Pass and Fort

Those Romans were clearly a hardy lot: this is Hardknott Pass looking westwards down a 1 in 3 (30%) incline towards the remains of a Roman Fort built on a road linking their Ravenglass fort and baths to garrisons at Ambeside and Kendal.   Today, this single track road is the most direct route from the central Lake District to West Cumbria, and shares the title of steepest road in Englandwith Rosedale Chimney Bank in North Yorkshire.

This was my second attempt to cross it, the first back in Autum 2016 had to be abandoned due to a puncture. It was probably not the best of weather to enjoy the views - but there again there was very little traffic, and I suspect the trip would be rather more "interesting" in the height of the season and good weather.

In keeping with the damp, misty conditions, and the minimal tonal range visible in the original image,  I've attempted a faded colour film effect in Photoshop
