Cockermouth castle

Ros and Chloe on our daily walk past Cockermouth castle...

The first castle on this site was built by the Normans in the twelfth century.

The castle played a significant role in the Wars of the Roses, and in the Civil War when it was badly damaged...

It has been owned by the Percy family, Earls of Northumberland...They passed it on to the Wyndham family in the eighteenth century.

It was the home of the dowager Lady Egremont until her death in 2013.

It is still privately owned, but it is only opened to the public on Heritage Open Days.

If you do get a guided tour of the castle, Ros might be your guide on that day!
