ENOUGH!

Students all over the country are walking out to demand gun control in this country.   Grandson Nik and Granddaughter Tatum, who go to different high schools texted me me their photos (it was hard to pick just a few!) )   Nik and friends took the city bus to Tatum’s school and then they all walked, many hundreds strong to the rally on the UW campus, with speakers from several schools and our new mayor (the middle pix) ,.  Oskar’s middle school had 17 minutes of silence for the latest school shooting victims one month ago in Florida.  One of the (teacher?) speakers had kids in Fiona's elementary school  Not sure what would even be appropriate for them..  
What a civic lesson this was!  All over Seattle, schools rallied.  Of course they both took the rest of the day off!   I read that the UW tweeted that no disciplinary actions would be noted in any college application.   Disciplinary action?    I guess that happened in some places.   Nik said they were encouraged to go.  One hopes they had some meaningful discussions along the way… these are the young enthusiastic faces that are going to fix our mess!   they will maybe also learn about process, and hopefully not get too discouraged yet.   I belong to the Grandmothers against GunViolence here in Seattle —we gathered petitions, wrote letters and emails and called hot lines to our state legislators to pass the latest gun control bill  (only a mini step:  to require advanced background checks for the purchase of assault weapons and raise the age of gun buyers from 18-21)—it wasn’t even voted on!!!!!   Indefensible!     But to be realistic, it needs to be a FEDERAL, not a STATE law.  And how big is that chance with the morans in Washington DC.  (interesting big orange sign about republicans if you can read it.)
Enough of my harangue….   for now…. but I think this was wonderful for them to participate.. we never protested anything like this from our high schools in the 50s!
