Kaikoura

The most interesting feature of our visit to Kaikoura today was visible evidence of the coastal uplift caused by the earthquake in November 2016. 80 km of the Kaikoura coast was lifted permanently out of the water by up to 3 m. Here you can see the new jagged rocks next to existing rocks that have been smoothed by the sea. Close up of the new rocks in extras. The other evidence was the road works on the coast road that was wrecked by the quake. 18m later and extensive repairs are still taking place. The town is so peaceful it is difficult to imagine the day of the quake.
