Castanea sativa

The landscape around the French hoose is full of sweet chestnut (castanea sativa) woodland and, at this time of year, these woods are full of these little beauties.

The cliched rural idyll can't really get much more cliched but, yes, we did roast chestnuts on the fire and, yes, they were delicious.

We also went to the Fete de Cidre at Flavignac today and watched the locals pressing big trailer fulls of apples to produce the most amazing apple juice I've ever tasted. Also bought some cracking local beer (not the first thing you associate with France but hey ho) and some ok goat's cheese.

All in all a good day of artisanale activities. Nice.
