Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Big boys' toys!

A lovely Spring day this morning at the Peterhead Bay of Refuge.
The enormous floating crane tied up along the North breakwater is the Asian Hercules III, the largest and most versatile heavy-lift sheerlegs of its kind in the world. She was made in China and is registered in Singapore.

This self-propelled floating sheerlegs can perform single lifts of up to 5,000 tonnes and carry out tandem lifts exceeding 5,000 tonnes with multiple cranes.

She is in Peterhead to assist in the installation of a deep sea offshore wind farm. The turbines are semi-submerged and attached to the sea bed by cables. The base of one of them can be seen at the right loaded on a barge. This is just the lower part, the tower and turbine blades will be attached to the top in due course. Much, much cleaner than gas, oil, coal or nuclear power plants.
