Not More Snow?

We woke up this morning to quite persistent flurries of snow. I had a meeting of the Black Bee Society up in Kinross so Googled the weather forecast and road conditions; all seemed to be as it should, so confidently set off. All went well and it was an interesting day with a talk by a bee keeper from Laeso, a small island half-way between Denmark and Sweden where civil war broke out between the amateurs who wanted black bees and the pros who didn’t care. The amateurs managed to set up a system of apartheid and the two groups of bees seemed to respect it and didn’t interbreed.

The society is now working on ways of sharing genetic material amongst bee keepers, many of us are keeping mongrels but want to keep the native black breed. Tests have been done sending small pieces of honeycomb, with eggs in them, through the post and the most inexperienced bee keepers can raise a queen from them given eight to ten day’s warning and a little instruction. Andrew Abrahams who looks after the Colonsay bees is very generous on that front even though he has to make a living off them.

Anyway, I was safely home before the snow started settling. Later, Mrs TD sent me out for some milk at the height of the blizzard; fortunately, I took a camera.
