Warming up
It was another beautiful day today and Gavin was chomping at the bit to go skiing but we had too many things to do first! First phone call was to the airline to try and get Luke and I a flight back on Thursday evening. Usually when someone has a leg injury they have to book a second(or even third) seat so they can stretch out their leg (Luke cannot bend his knee) but the flight was so full, due to it being Easter weekend, that we were only able to get a seat each - he will hopefully be able to put his leg across me and my seat to stretch it out. Then it was a phone call to the travel insurance company to notify them and find out what we have to do.
Tomorrow morning at 6.30am Luke and I are going by taxi to the hospital - he has to be there at 7am and they are operating at 8am. I will be able to get to and from the hospital by walking, bus and train. Gavin had the same injury (but not as bad) six years ago (from playing squash, not skiing!) so we are familiar with the procedure - the surgeon takes hamstring from his other leg which he folds over and over to 'make' a ligament - if he cannot get a hamstring easily he assured us they 'have some in the fridge!' - meaning donor hamstring. However the surgeon is more concerned about the ruptured meniscus and said that will take a long time to heal - no sport for at least 9 months and he was not to keen when Luke mentioned rugby! Skiing possibly from next January. What a blow for Luke!
I am a bit concerned about Luke and I travelling back to London - we are getting to the airport by train and being on crutches it is not that easy to hop on and off a train. What's more of a worry is when Luke returns to Berlin after the Easter weekend. He has quite a commute to work, walking at least 20 minutes to get to the U bahn and then up and down stairs to get the train. His office is on the 5th floor and there is no lift!! He will have to be on crutches for about 4-6 weeks. I have suggested he just gets an Uber to work while he is on crutches but he won't hear of it, he does not want any fuss and says he will be fine....
It was warming up today and you can see the snow melting. However, the forecast is for more snow this week but I am not sure how much snow. I hope not too much as I am planning on using my bicycle this week!
