Black And White March: #26
London Road Church building. Now de-consecrated. In February 2017 the Church of Scotland enacted its planned merger of the London Road congregation with that of Holyrood Abbey Parish Church not far away. Most of Holyrood Abbey congregation followed its minister in 2014 splitting away from the Church of Scotland when the General Synod decided to allow active homosexuals to be ordained. The breakaways then formed their own independent church called Holyrood Evangelical.
So The Church Of Scotland were left with two church buildings quite close together: Holyrood Abbey that was recently refurbished with modern flexible facilities but with a massively reduced congregation; and the traditional style expensive to maintain London Road with a usual Sunday headcount of 60 in a space built to hold 1000. Thus the two congregations merged together under the name 'Meadowbank Church' and now use the Hollyrood Abbey Parish Church building.
London Road Church was put on the market for offers over £59,000, however it has been withdrawn to allow a community buyout scheme time to try and get resources together.
All this mostly interests me because I lived on London Road in a dilapidated flat just along from the church, more years ago than I like to think about.
Extra picture shows the church building's front door. There is another main entrance on the right hand side opening onto Easter Road.
