The Glow-worm clearance team
Apparently we have glow-worms in our district who haven't been doing too well over the last few years, so the team has been out today (and on another site during a previous day) in order to clear the brambles and scrub from places along the Trans Pennine Trail. Now I don't know anything about glow-worm mating habits, but by all accounts the female needs an upward growing shoot so she can climb to the top and flash to a passing male, so the objective of the scrub clearance was to enable individual shoots to grow up tall and strong. They were also creating piles of tree branches and shrub litter in order to encourage, slugs and other creepy crawlies that will provide a tasty snack for the glow-worm lava.
We're hoping to feature our intrepid conservationists in the next Thurgoland Parish Newsletter.
p.s. I'm a little concerned about the health and safety of the `sawing' technique being demonstrated (top centre).
