Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

2018 Thursday — Quiet Moment

I took this photo after teaching class this morning. I suppose most students are in classrooms now and the campus looks deserted.

I was just about to leave the house this morning when my phone sounded that a text was arriving. Mr. Fun was already gone from the house because last evening his mom was having such a terrible time, she was deep into a dementia moment, acting and talking very strange, so he phoned a place called “Nurse Next Door,” to get her 24/7 in-home Care. They immediately sent someone to her home.

However, this morning at 7:00 a new person arrives to relieve the night shift person, so Mr. Fun thought he ought to be at his mom’s house during that transition. So I was home alone when the text message arrived to inform me that my stepdad Pops had died.

Even though I knew he had recently had a stroke and had been placed in a skilled nursing facility, the news stunned me and my emotions were oozing out my eyes. In less than an hour I had a class to teach and I needed to get to the campus.

So that’s exactly what I did — I packaged my emotions, drove to the college, got to my office, gathered my books and materials, walked to class, welcomed my students, and stood and delivered. I never mentioned to my students what a rush of emotions was happening inside of me.

Now, class is over and I’ve phoned Pops’ wife Sheri to express my love to her and to keep us informed of the plans for a celebration of Pops’ life.

The acceleration of constant and continual change in our lives at the moment is staggering.

Rosie & (Mr. Fun), aka Carol
