Treatise of the Failures of Industrial Agriculture
By any measure the weather of the last few months has been unusual, but it continues to surprise. As we found out with the appearance of "snirt" last month (the mixture of snow and dirt which represents a real and growing ecological problem) industrial agriculture is rapidly degrading and eroding soils. Even so, standing yards away with what Natural England called the most unspoilt river in the country (not any more after the quantities of silt which have been poured into it over the last few days) I was still shocked by how much of this steeply sloping 15 hectare field had poured down the hillside. My phone snaps don't do the scene justice.
