Up on the crater rim
Heading back from Christchurch today, I decided to take the long way home. Not that it is that much further than my usual route (less than 5kms on top of the regular drive home) but it does add a little time-wise, thanks to the sinuous nature of the Summit Road as it winds its way along the crater rim.
The views from the Summit Road (Port Hills side in this case, rather than the Akaroa section) over Lyttelton Harbour and the Plains towards the Southern Alps are, on the right day, stunning. Whilst it was overcast , the cloud formations and subdued lighting gave great atmosphere both to the the vista towards the distant mountains and the harbour.
Making my way down from Omahu Bush and Gibraltar Rock, I pulled off the road on the saddle above Teddington to capture this view down the harbour.
