Bridled Guillemot
Guillemot, Uria aalge, in winter/non-breeding plumage (bridled variant).
This bridled guillemot was one of two close inshore on Saturday afternoon. (Another view in 'extras'.)
One was far enough out to escape the breaking waves. This one was repeatedly getting washed in to shore by the breaking waves. Two black-backed gulls had noticed its distress and tried to attack it but the guillemot still had enough energy to evade it- but for how much longer?
In this area (Forth estuary), around 7% of guillemots are the bridled variant. Bridled guillemots have a white ring around the eye and a white line from it towards the rear. This is the case at all seasons. The normal variant has dark-brown/black colouration in these areas.
[EDIT]
After studying other frames captured, it would appear that this individual has a broken left wing. Outlook therefore not good.
