Lost to the Sea

The village of Hallsands was lost to the sea in 1917, following dredging for sand and gravel for the naval dockyard at Plymouth. This was a gradual process from the 1890s. By the end of 1917 only one house was habitable. The fight for compensation took seven years. ‘The beach went to Devonport and the cottages to the sea .’ On a walk today .
