Stone Balls

Many neolithic carved stone balls have been found over the north of Scotland including Orkney.
These replicas, in a current exhibition at the Stromness Museum, have been hand carved recently by Christopher Gee using tools made from local quartz and sandstone.
[There are real neolithic stone balls to be seen, too, at various places.]
The decorated stone they are resting on was also carved and then coloured by Chris Gee using local hematite, bone and charcoal.  The pattern and colours were inspired by similar incised stone found at the Ness of Brodgar excavation in Orkney.
