Singing From A Height

Male wrens are proclaiming their territories by singing from elevated positions. This one is on a sprig of elder which arches over the top of the Nissen hut. It's a favourite songpost for robins and dunnocks too. This wren has probably built up to six nests and is hoping that females will be attracted by his gutsy song to investigate them and hopefully choose one. She will then line it with feathers and they will breed. His incredibly loud song is also warning off other males. We who are interested in birds must make the most of the short period before the leaves unfurl. Once this happens they will be much more difficult to spot.

I photographed a thrush doing the same today and as always Home Thoughts From Abroad came to mind. Even though the weather is rubbish I'm very happy to be in England - now!
