The Bone Yard.........
All 3 of us had a great nights sleep last night, and started off the morning to the Hunting Island Nature Trail. This state park was hit fairly hard by the hurricanes last fall.
A bone yard is at the beaches edge where the trees meet the beaches edge. The power of the hurricanes and the force of the w after was so dramatic it became beyond words, for all 3 of us. We each walked around in awwww, amazed, and pretty much struck by the horrific damage, the size of the huge, uprooted trees, and the distance inland that was destroyed. Then we were struck by how far giant trees were dragged out to sea! I am standing on one tree trunk, leaning against another, newer tree that the storm took out.
The first extra is the foundation of a house, that used to be here. The waves and current smashed the concrete, I found 2 parts of the the leftover! Concrete blocks were ripped apart and dragged to the sea. Pipes, wire, wood, and tree skeletons were all that was left. The trees that had been down before the hurricanes were already bleached white.
The second extra is a skeleton of what used to be. It managed to stand, as a warning to any that pass by.
Extra 3 is the tangled heap of trees, roll up on shore, about 12-15 feet tall. This bone yard runs for a long ways, down both sides of the shore, full of destruction.
Extra 4 is the Hunting Island Lighthouse that guides ships into the sound safely, so that ships don't suffer the same fate as the trees!
