By the sea in Bamburgh
Another lovely day with lots of sunshine and so much warmer than it has been. The day started early with exciting Netball, a run to the Castle for some, brunch of kippers/smoked salmon and a lot of sitting in the sun. Then we walked by the sea at Bamburgh, found Preston Tower (see extra) and ended up with fish and chips in Seahouses.
Preston Tower
Gordon came upon this impressive tower by chance whilst on a bike ride a few days ago and he took us to see it this afternoon. This Pele tower was built between 1392 and 1399, when warfare between England and Scotland was endemic. Later in the sixteenth century there was still the need for defensive buildings, because of raids by Reivers.
When peace came, half the tower was pulled down, but this is still one of the most complete pele towers in the area. It is possible to go inside the tower and see the guard room and many small rooms, some furnished as they might have been in 1400. Views from the top of the tower are incredible. The magnificent striking clock was installed in 1864.
