Hitra

There is a temptation at this time of year on Shetland to just post the 'puffin-of-the-day' picture each day..

However this weekend there has been a series of commemorative events marking the 75th anniversary of this little boat going into service as part of  the 'Shetland Bus'.

The Hitra was built in the US as a submarine chaser but handed over to a Norwegian crew in 1943 to become part of the transport route between the UK and occupied Norway - between 1943 and the end of the war the Hitra carried out 45 voyages across the North Sea.

Hitra went past Sumburgh Head this afternoon, heading back to it's base in Norway.
