Redpoll
A first for us here and I was so thrilled to see it on the niger seed it had to be blipped !!
Hubs spotted the, 'sparrow with a red head' yesterday and I just couldn't believe my luck when I saw it. There were actually three in all which would make sense as they are lively sociable birds joining the goldfinches and chaffinches in the melee, all vying the get to the topped up feeders.
They build their nests in bushes or trees at any height over about 2foot. From the outside the nest appears rather untidy but inside it's neat and compact with a lining of willow down and sometimes hair and feathers. They lay in May-June and the tiny nestlings are fed by both parents. Ooo I hope they nest nearby!!
