Israel & Palestine trip day 4
Today we entered the City of David, the oldest part of Jerusalem and on a low hill outside the city walls. Settlers chose this hill because it has a good water source at the base, the Gihon spring. It is called David's City and the Jerusalem that Melkizedek ruled and which David captured.
The tunnel built by King Hezekiah, some time after david's reign was in order for Jerusalem to ensure a water supply while under siege. Two teams of workers chiselled into the conduit wall and met midway. We walked this waterway which has thigh high water in places, is very narrow and sometimes the ceiling requires stooping. It is 533 m long. No overtaking, no turning back.....
Then to the ruins of the first temple, built by king Solomon. Beautiful ruins and amazing architecture. The vastness of everything here is incredible...and the temperatures and blue sky and tall cedar trees just add to its beauty and interest for me...and everyone I'm sure.
Our last day in Jerusalem. Tomorrow we move to Bethlehem in Palestine.
