Get knotted
I went to St Andrews after work to pick up Neil and his friend Steve. Both of them had met there when they were undergraduates so they'd been having a day revisiting old haunts. They were in the pub by the time I arrived, and after having a drink with them we then headed down to Dunino Den for a quick look around as the evening was a fine one.
I hadn't been there for a few years but the Clootie Tree appears to have now gone. There was a strange stump-like thing in its place which had "offerings" left on it. Neil said it looked more like part of an upside down tree rather than a stump, as the top appeared to consist of roots. It was well anchored into the ground though. I'd heard that periodically representatives from the church used to come down and remove items from the Clootie Tree so perhaps they've just gone one giant step further and removed the tree itself.
Some of the carvings were still there - this Celtic knot, and a faded Celtic cross. But there used to be a sort of Celtic Trinity knot too and I couldn't see that at all. Maybe I just overlooked it though. I edited the photo of the knot to make it black and white as it stands out better like that I think.
