Mine on a hill
I have looked at the round shape of the fortified wall on the hill in shibden valley many times and i have found out it was the head of a coal mine shaft . the round shape housed a horse powered gin which could lower men and boys down to the coal face below then haul the bucket back to surface full of coal. there is another example at Catherine slack near queensbury
