Slowing the Flow

This is part of a demonstration project on East Ordsall Lane, Salford.

Flood risk is a big issue in this City. It takes two forms - fluvial flooding (from rivers and smaller watercourses). And surface water flooding, when the drainage systems cannot cope - a problem that is increasing as hard surfaces replace green and porous surfaces.

A solution to surface water flooding is to plant trees, giving the roots plenty of space, with water entering the tree pit and distributed to the root system through perforated pipes. The whole then connects to the drainage system. It’s already been tried elsewhere in the city and scientifically shown to work. Water In is reduced as the trees take up the water, so less water out into the drains.

Like the best solutions - simple.

And of course it also introduces much needed greenery, so a win win.

This shot is also a bit abstract, and has lots of lines :)
