Following the contours ...
An afternoon exploring Four Views of Schiehallion , an event organised by the John Muir Trust to celebrate the Great Lines Project . In addition to Karen Rann (visual artist) talking about the project, we learnt about the mapping of Perthshire, the work of Charles Hutton, current activities on the mountain with a wonderful musical interlude by Munro Gauld and Fiona Harris with Fiona playing "The Yellow London Lady", a violin gifted to Duncan Robertson by one of the the scientists who lived on Schiehallion taking the measurements which Charles Hutton then used to determine the mean density of the earth. Duncan was a local musican who brought supplies to scientists during their stay and entertained them. He lost his violin on "The Night the Bothy Burned Down", the final night of the field trips which was celebrated somewhat energetically.
My blip is a photograph of contour walk lead by Karen Rann last week in which the walkers took charcoal rubbings of Schiehallion at 700m.
All in all an interesting afternoon - learned some new things and much to think about (the politics of cartography for one).
Got caught in hailstones coming back and now relaxing before heading out to friends for supper.
